Know A Woman Who Should Run for Public Office?

The Women's Campaign Forum has launched the She Should Run campaign, a comprehensive effort to gather nominations of 1,000 pro-choice women who should run for public office. WCF is committed to ensuring these women get the essential encouragement they need and to providing them access to key campaign education and resources.  Do you know a woman who should run?  Research shows women are much more likely to run if someone asks them to. Tell a woman she should run for office, share her story, and send her on her way toward becoming the civic leader she was always meant to be. For more information, visit http://www.sheshouldrun.org/page/content/nominatenotify/

AAUW encourages women to be active in and knowledgeable about the political process. She Should Run provides another resource towards that goal. To understand more about how you can influence the debate, visit the AAUW Voter Education Campaign.

Hundreds of thousands of “War is Not the Answer” yard/window signs have been distributed across the country.  Concerned families are expressing their support for our troops and for peaceful resolutions to today’s international conflicts.  Now there is real change going on in Congress.  The process is very fluid.  Yard signs everywhere will help to change the political environment in North Dakota toward peace. “War is Not the Answer” yard/window signs, with stakes, are immediately available in Bismarck-Mandan from Larry Spears (258-1899).  Please make a contribution of $5.00, if you will, to Bismarck Quaker Meeting, 15160 Sundown Dr, Bismarck, ND 58503-9206.

PEPP: Voter Collaborative Recruitment

Why do you care about who is running? Why should we have a voter collaborative? Why do you vote at all?

We are looking for new folks to help with the voter collaborative.  We are also seeking past collaborative members to join in the efforts for the Get Out The Vote campaigns and Candidate Forums for the 2007 Moorhead City Council and school board elections.  We will also start to talk about 2008 and elections happening in June for Fargo and Cass county leading us into the November elections.

Our first challenge together will be to craft a message that will move even the most apathetic person out there to at least think about getting to the polls. If you are interested, please call the PEPP office at 218-236-5434.

NEW: “Bright Bird: The Art of Corita Kent” Here in September/October

Corita Kent was a nun who began her art career in the placid 1950s and who exploded onto the art scene in the turbulent culture of the 1960s.  Her dramatic and colorful serigraphs captured the time through the use of quotations, advertising techniques and Beatles song lyrics. Her themes and artistic style continues to make her art vibrant in today’s world.

The Corita Center in Los Angeles is making an enormous gift to our region by loaning their permanent collection for two months. On September 15, 7 p.m. there will be a Gallery Opening with Corita Center Curator Alexandra Carrera, Los Angles. He will present a gallery talk about Corita’s life and work at 8 p.m. with a reception catered by Green Market.

Many other events and programs are associated with this display. All programs are free of charge and located at the Spirit Room Gallery, 111 Broadway, Fargo.  This is a collaborative project of the Presentation Sisters, People Escaping Poverty Project, the Spirit Room Gallery, Theatre B, and project manager Jill M Johnson-Danielson.  This project is made possible by grants from the Otto Bremer Foundation, the Lake Region Arts Council through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature, and by the Lake Agassiz Arts Council. NEW: Training in Measuring Program Outcomes Offered In September

Classes in Measuring Program Outcomes will be offered this fall. These classes are intended for human service agency personnel who must develop their outcome evaluation abilities, and for students who want to gain exposure to outcome research and develop skills highly marketable in the human/social service arena. Responding to tremendous local, regional, and national pressures from public and private funders, F-M area and regional human service agencies now must systematically monitor their impact on clients and client systems. Programs must show empirically they are doing what they said they would do in their funding requests! This is making outcome assessment as fundamental to human service agency operations as grantwriting and program administration. This training is Co-Sponsored by The United Way of Cass Clay and Minnesota State University Moorhead Continuing Studies. Five Fridays and One Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., September 21, 28 & October 6, 12, 19, & 26, 2007. Location: Minnesota State University Moorhead, Moorhead, MN.  For more information contact Kathleen Paulson, MSUM Continuing Studies at 218-477-5051 or paulsonk@mnstate.edu

UND-NCAA LAWSUIT: Sioux legal bill nears $1 million
By Joseph Marks, Herald Staff Writer - 09/06/2007
The cost of UND's lawsuit against the NCAA over the school's Fighting Sioux nickname topped $780,000 as of Friday ... The lawsuit is being funded by private donations to a litigation fund managed by the UND Foundation. The majority of those payments have gone to the private Utah law firm Fabian and Clenendin, whose attorneys are working on the case as special assistant attorneys general. http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=49341&section=news

Aug 20, 2007 - 04:03:25 CDT

GRAND FORKS (AP) - Ralph Engelstad Arena officials say they are seeking a diplomatic end to the University of North Dakota "Fighting Sioux" nickname dispute, but American Indian leaders say the arena's approach has lacked diplomacy. http://www.bismarcktribune.com/articles/2007/08/20/news/local/138005.txt

OUR OPINION: No more end runs on UND nickname
Editorial, Grand Forks Herald - 09/02/2007
Ralph Engelstad Arena's decision to reach out to the Sioux people is the right impulse, but the execution is completely wrong ... The arena ran into trouble last week when its envoy persuaded a veterans group at Standing Rock Sioux Reservation to support the Fighting Sioux nickname. In return, the arena would put up a memorial honoring Sioux veterans. http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=48973&section=Opinion

By Joseph Marks, Herald Staff Writer - 08/30/2007

Members of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation's Veterans' Group board voted 3-2 Wednesday night to rescind their two-day-old support for UND's Fighting Sioux nickname and logo ... The board voted unanimously to support the nickname during a meeting Monday, but board members later were inundated with calls from Standing Rock veterans and other tribe members expressing opposition to the nickname, said Ed Black Cloud, the board's acting chairman. http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=48600&section=homepage

Tribe distances itself from Dupris, reaffirms logo opposition

COLUMNIST LLOYD OMDAHL : Time for UND to let ‘Fighting Sioux' logo go

Published Monday, August 27, 2007

As they first declared in Babylon, “the handwriting is on the wall.” And when it comes to UND'S “Fighting Sioux” logo, the writing on the wall is so clear that there can be little doubt that circumstances dictate a transition to a new nickname. http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=48291&section=homepage

By Tony Spilde/Bismarck Tribune - Aug 23, 2007 - 08:57:28 CDT

Those good pedagogues out at United Tribes Technical College would certainly agree that a mind is a terrible thing to waste ... As for the annual powwow, on the other hand, it would be a good thing if it was a waste ... Literally ... In Lakota, “waste” translates to “good.” http://www.bismarcktribune.com/articles/2007/08/23/news/update/doc46cd9242044fb168996730.txt

Putting to rest the myth of a ‘free ride'
Dorreen Yellow Bird, Grand Forks Herald - 09/05/2007
As the angry voices over UND's nickname and logo grew to a fevered pitch, one assertion stood out as being so blatantly incorrect that it needs to be corrected and never repeated. It is this: The claim that American Indian students somehow get a “free ride” at UND. http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=49230&section=Opinion

By Virginia Granter, Bismarck Tribune - Aug 25, 2007 - 06:44:59 CDT

He wanted his circular sculpture representing the Earth to have this message: That all people of all cultures have a place there. So, he made an opening on one end to allow any and all to walk in and sit on the bench inside this "Earth." ... Sit. Not spray ... But it was spray paint he found when he - David Black Cloud, 27, the sculpture's designer and an art student at United Tribes Technical College - arrived in Pioneer Park on Friday morning. He was with his art instructor, Wayne Pruse, to do the last bit of finishing work it needed before the new sculpture's Sept. 5 dedication. http://www.bismarcktribune.com/articles/2007/08/25/news/local/138293.txt

FARGO (AP) - For the soft-spoken, unassuming man he is, Akol Joseph Maker has invited a staggering amount of personal scrutiny lately ... In July, Maker, 29, a refugee from southern Sudan, let a Fargo filmmaking crew in on some family routines he normally keeps private. They filmed him making goat soup and a polenta dish in his Fargo apartment - a traditionally female role in his home country, which he assumed here as caretaker of three younger siblings. http://www.bismarcktribune.com/articles/2007/08/29/news/state/138459.txt

Iowa court rules banning of Same-sex marriage unconstitutional

What a great day for Iowa and for our communities! An Iowa court has ruled that it is unconstitutional  to deny six same-sex couples in Lambda Legal’s lawsuit the right to marry ... Today’s decision brings to life the promise of equality in Iowa’s constitution for same-sex couples and their families. All people deserve to be treated fairly by their government and the decision makes that principle clear. Lambda Legal originally filed the marriage lawsuit in December 2005. Last Sunday marked the 87th anniversary of the day that the U.S. Constitution was amended to grant women the right to vote. Poolman departure opportunity to name a consumer advocate

By Don Morrison, Published Friday, September 07, 2007

Most of us know about the worry in planning for – or experiencing – a health care need or emergency. We see insurance companies’ polished ads telling us we should trust them to come through for us when a health care emergency strikes. We pay exorbitant premiums in exchange for that rosy scenario. http://www.in-forum.com/Opinion/articles/177413

Did The Forum make any attempt to research this organization before publishing its executive director’s article as a “Their Opinion” on Labor Day?
