Nominations Sought for Fargo Human Relations Awards

The Fargo Human Relations Commission is seeking nominations for its annual Human Relations Awards.  The awards will be presented at the Fargo Theatre on January 15, 2007, at an event honoring the life, work and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Three awards will be presented; 1) individual adult, 2) individual youth/young adult and 3) business/organization.

To nominate an individual or organization, please answer the following questions:

How does this individual or organization demonstrate leadership by example and a commitment to human relations?

How does this individual or organization demonstrate creative methods to improve human relations?

Operation Shoebox Christmas
Help provide gifts for adults in need, including the developmentally disabled, the mentally ill, the homeless, and resettled refugees and recent immigrant to our country. The procedure is as follows:
1. Wrap the top and bottom of a shoe box separately, so that the box can be opened and it’s contents examined.
2. Place any variety of items in the shoebox that could provide the recipient with an experience of joy at Christmas.
3. Tie the top and bottom of the box together with a ribbon.
4. Indicate whether the gift is for a man or a woman.
Deliver the box to one of the 6 FM Hornbacher’s by Dec. 19. We ask that churches, organizations, or businesses that are collecting these for their congregation please contact Del Rae A. Williams at 701-238-2157 or delraecpa@hotmail.com and she will direct you to the organization in the greatest need, so as to distribute the gifts equitably between the organizations in need.

The WNRRV has been asked to help collect gifts for women who are in a homeless shelter this holiday season. We are asking you, our supporters, if you would consider donating new or almost new bath sets, underclothing (larger sizes are needed the most), toiletries and other gifts for women - or making monetary donations for the shelter(s) to be able to purchase needed  items. Again, please keep the needs of the women in shelter in mind as you do your holiday shopping. If possible, bring them to our office at 810 4th Ave. So. , Suite 130, Town Site Center, Moorhead or we can pick them up if need be. Contact Vickie McCollum (218-233-2737) for more details.

The Local chapter of the national campaign for the creation of a cabinet level Department of Peace is looking for a few good men and women volunteers, across the state, to team up to lobby for this bill.  Please contact State Coordinator and District Team Leader Paddy McLaughlin to see how you might become involved with this powerful bill for peace.  Meetings in Fargo at the Center, every 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month, 8 p.m. Call 701-232-0694 for details. www.thepeacealliance.org

Moorhead Human Relations Commission asks for 2007 Human Rights Awards Nominations

The Moorhead Human Rights Commission (MHRC) is seeking nominations for the Eleventh Annual Moorhead Human Rights Awards. The awards honor individuals and/or organizations for making outstanding contributions to protecting and promoting human rights in our community. The five categories include: Workplace, Education, Civic/Community, Non-profit, and Youth/Young Adult. The nominee should have an established integrity, creativity and commitment to principles and exhibit courage and perseverance in the area of human rights. Parents are raising funds to attend the 15th Anniversary Family Voices National Conference and Gala, May 23rd-26th. Our hope is to send a minimum of 8 parents to this awesome conference.  North Dakota families will work with national policymakers and other parent leaders from around the country on critical issues for children with special health care needs. Parent leaders will return with a Leadership Curriculum to replicate upon return and much critical policy information for children with special health care needs. All donations for this effort are tax deductible, and will be announced in the next Family Voices snail mail newsletter.  All names that make a donation will eligible to win one of 3 prizes and will be drawn before the families depart to the conference. Human Service Forum: “Put People First”

The Forum will be Wednesday, December 27 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the YWCA Shelter Community Room at 3000 S. University Drive Fargo, ND.

The forum will focus its attention on the work of Waking the Sleeping Giant, national trends for the Nonprofit Sector, and the client/consumer perspective. There will be a dozen clients/consumers giving testimony connected to their lives with emphasis on the issues in the Human Service system which are impacting our community. The Theme of the forum will be “Put People First,” and will include the participants of the forum making a pledge to put people first.

The Health and Human Services Public Forum involving ND and MN legislators is Wednesday, Dec. 27th at the

A newly launched blog by Kate Barr, Executive Director of the Nonprofits Assistance Fund, can be found here . The blog focuses particularly on nonprofit organizations, large and small, that must work to raise funds each year. In a weekly one-pager, Kate shares her thoughts and insights on nonprofit management. The subscription is free and you’ll find very practical, relevant information on what all NPO’s face every day to help make your organizations successful.

Family Voices of North Dakota Compiling Information for PublicationFVND is compiling a list of support for families in areas around ND. The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bill Thursday sponsored by Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., that prohibits protesters at the funerals of fallen U.S. soldiers. ... The legislation was largely in response to the funeral protests led by the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas.
