Operation Shoebox Christmas
The WNRRV has been asked to help collect gifts for women who are in a homeless shelter this holiday season. We are asking you, our supporters, if you would consider donating new or almost new bath sets, underclothing (larger sizes are needed the most), toiletries and other gifts for women - or making monetary donations for the shelter(s) to be able to purchase needed items. Again, please keep the needs of the women in shelter in mind as you do your holiday shopping. If possible, bring them to our office at 810 4th Ave. So. , Suite 130, Town Site Center, Moorhead or we can pick them up if need be. Contact Vickie McCollum (218-233-2737) for more details. Information on Preventing Teen Deaths at Kids Count Site The final copy of the Inform "Child and Teen Death Rates: Examining Our Most Preventable Losses" is now posted at www.ndkidscount.org. Often the awareness and accompanying facts can help people feel more empowered to take action. Please feel free to share this Inform either by referral to our website or via a printed hard copy.
Child and teen death rates are consistently among North Dakota's poorest ranked indicators. This is especially important because the leading causes of death among teens ages 15-19 in North Dakota - motor vehicle crashes and suicide - are preventable. Regardless of how many children die each year in North Dakota, any death is one too many and deserves attention.

Medicare and You 2007 Publication Now Available Online The
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is encouraging people with Medicare to
review their current coverage this fall to see if it will meet their needs in
2007. Now is the time to help people think about the cost, coverage, and
customer service that they need in a plan to get the most out of their Medicare.
Medicare The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) changed the new local coverage determination (LCD) for power mobility devices (PMD), eliminating a requirement that an individual be “unable to independently stand and pivot” to qualify for access to high functioning mobility devices. In addition, CMS refined the PMD fee schedule, raising reimbursement levels after consumers, manufacturers and vendors vigorously protested. These changes are designed to improve the Medicare pricing accuracy, support high quality and service, provide value for Medicare and its beneficiaries, and ensure that beneficiaries who need mobility assistance receive needed modern medical care. The new rules and fees become effective November 15.
ADA Road to Freedom Bus Tour The disability community in Washington, DC will celebrate the launch of the yearlong Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Road To Freedom bus tour, organized by the National Coalition for Disability Rights. The bus tour is designed to expose mainstream audiences across the country to the ADA and the history of the disability rights movement. For more information about the tour, visit http://www.adawatch.org/RoadtoFreedom.htm.

U.S. District Judge James Robertson ruled that the U.S. Department of the Treasury must produce paper money that can be distinguished by touch as well as sight, settling a 2002 lawsuit filed by the American Council of the Blind. The lawsuit alleged a violation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act for the “failure to design and issue paper currency that is readily distinguishable to blind and visually impaired people.” Of the more than 180 countries that print paper currency, the United States is the only country to print its bills identical in size and color in all denominations.
