AARP National Policy Forum You are invited to attend an AARP national policy forum, to be held 11 a.m., Monday, December 4, at the Kelly Inn in Bismarck. The forum will be an opportunity for North Dakotans to benefit from a national dialogue on care of our older and disabled citizens, including what’s needed, challenges in providing care choices, and how to make the most positive impact for the greatest number of people. North Dakota has the highest percentage in the country of people 85 and older. With our population aging and people living longer, the need for consumer-directed care that allows people to age with dignity and respect remains essential. Representatives of the AARP Board of Directors and AARP’s National Policy Council will provide information and listen to comments on the best ways to link older Americans with the support services they need in the care setting of their choice. Advocates and professionals on aging, and elders and family members navigating the long-term care system, are welcome to talk about how to better care for our older and disabled citizens. Box lunches will be available for all participants, either to eat at the Kelly Inn or to take with you. Because of room capacity, attendance is limited to the first 100 people to register. To register, please call our office at 701-355-3646.

Medicare The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) changed the new local coverage determination (LCD) for power mobility devices (PMD), eliminating a requirement that an individual be “unable to independently stand and pivot” to qualify for access to high functioning mobility devices. In addition, CMS refined the PMD fee schedule, raising reimbursement levels after consumers, manufacturers and vendors vigorously protested. These changes are designed to improve the Medicare pricing accuracy, support high quality and service, provide value for Medicare and its beneficiaries, and ensure that beneficiaries who need mobility assistance receive needed modern medical care. The new rules and fees become effective November 15.
