1.) Red River Valley for Howard Dean Volunteer Committee Meeting (Fargo)

The Red River Valley for Howard Dean Volunteer Committee will be having an organization/strategy meeting Wednesday night, March 5, at 7:00 pm in the South Fargo Applebee's (2700 13th Ave S). For those that are unfamiliar with Dr. Howard Dean and his policies, he is the former Governor of Vermont who signed the civil unions bill that gave equal rights to same-sex couples, and created near-universal health care for all children under 18 years old. He also opposes the President's unilateral war on Iraq.

If you're interesting in providing your talent and energy to the campaign, or if you just want to learn more about this interesting man, please come by. You can also visit his national campaign web site at http://www.deanforamerica.com or visit the local committee message board at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RedRiverValleyforDean

American Indian restaurateur “Famous Dave” Anderson will pay a special visit to North Dakota State University next month. Please mark your calendars.

Anderson, owner of the national “Famous Dave’s” restaurant chain, will present a public address at Century Theater, Memorial Union, on Friday, March 28, at 7 p.m. The program will be free and open to the public.

Anderson’s visit to Fargo will be sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the College of Business Administration, SIFE, and NASA. It will be his first appearance on the NDSU campus.

In addition to his evening presentation, while he’s on-campus Anderson plans to visit with students, including members of NDSU’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) organization, Native American Student Association (NASA), and Indian students from the tri-college campuses.

 A success story

The son of a Chotaw father and Chippewa mother, Anderson was raised in a blue-collar Chicago neighborhood. His notable achievements and accolades over the past 30 years are numerous and impressive.

The founder of a chain of 52 restaurants stretching from Utah to Georgia, Anderson’s culinary talents have long been recognized with “Best Barbecue in America” and “Best Ribs” awards at Kansas City’s American Royal Barbecue Contest, Cleveland’s Great American Rib Cook-off, and the Twin Cities’ Ribfest. His “Famous Dave’s Backroads and Sidestreets” won the National Barbecue Association’s Award of Excellence as the best new barbecue/grill cookbook.

During the past decade, Anderson has founded three publicly traded companies on Wall Street and helped create more than 18,000 jobs. He has been awarded a Bush Leadership Fellowship and was recognized as the “Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year” in Minnesota and the Dakotas by Ernst and Young, NASDAQ, and USA Today.

In addition to the success he’s enjoyed from his restaurants and extraordinary recipes, Anderson has managed businesses for the Lac Courte Oreilles Lake Superior Band of Ojibwa in Wisconsin and helped found and manage Grand Casinos and the Rainforest Café.

3.) Forum Article: Another Attempt at Human Rights Commission Fails

Another attempt at human rights commission fails

By Janell Cole, The Forum - 03/04/2003

BISMARCK – Backers of a state human rights commission made another try Monday by proposing an amendment to a bill that would create such a panel. The House Judiciary Committee voted 7-3 against putting the proposed amendment onto Senate Bill 2067, even though no one had testified against the idea.

Legislators said the state Labor Department’s Human Rights Division should have more time to operate before something else is added to its structure. The division was created by the 2001 Legislature. “We haven’t had a chance to see what we’ve done,” said committee chairman, Rep. Duane DeKrey, R-Pettibone.

The Senate, earlier this session, defeated Senate Bill 2306, in which Sen. Tim Mathern, D-Fargo, proposed a seven-member rights commission be appointed by the governor. The bill died on a 29-16 vote on Feb. 11. What Mathern, proposed Monday was a panel with much less authority and less cost than was called for in his earlier bill.

Cheryl Bergian, Fargo, director of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition, said the proposed panel would be a “low-cost resource” to the Human Rights Division, functioning more as an advisory board. It would not have the rule-making power Mathern’s original bill proposed.

Mathern said the seven member commission created by his amendment would be volunteers. They would not be paid per-diem, only expenses such as mileage.

Bergian, and other supporters of his amendment say too little has been accomplished by the new division since it was created in 2001.

Labor Commissioner Mark Bachmeier and staff have not yet listed their telephone number in state phone books (other than Bismarck) as they said they would. A Human Rights Division survey on the extent and nature of discrimination in North Dakota in December 2001 was not released until last month, after Bergian’s group told legislators of the delay. The coalition also asked the right’s division to set up an advisory commission. The commissioner has never responded to the request, Bergian said.

Some on the committee did not care for Mathern bringing in a proposed amendment to a bill after his original idea had been shot down. “This should have gone to the Delayed Bills Committee (for consideration),” DeKrey said.
