Programs Announcements Updates Resources January 23, 2003 Hello members and friends of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition!
In this week’s PAUR Report:
********************************************* 1.) Fargo Forum Articles on Diversity and Human Rights Other views: Diversity is a component of ‘Saving
North Dakota’ http://www.in-forum.com/articles/?id=25953 John Calvert doesn’t like North Dakota State University’s diversity efforts (“Diversity not about education,” Jan. 10 Forum). Neither does Terry DeVine (Jan. 12 Forum). As members of the NDSU Diversity Council, we would like to present another point of view. We think diversity is all about education and, for that matter, all about Saving North Dakota. F-M grows more diverse: Award winners urge
fighting for justice http://www.in-forum.com/articles/?id=26194 A true civil rights activist never rests. He or she forges ahead, trying to extend equality to every corner of their community. Fargo board backs forming Human Rights Commission http://www.in-forum.com/articles/?id=26203 The Fargo City Commission will support the concept of creating a Human Rights Commission in North Dakota. City commissioners voted 3-2 Monday night in favor of the idea, although they hadn’t reviewed actual proposed legislation. Human relationships top priority, author says http://www.in-forum.com/articles/?id=26165 All of us – the average citizens of America – are the architects of this nation. And it’s a nation built on human relationships and hope. That’s the message Clifton Taulbert delivered Sunday night in Moorhead. It’s no coincidence that his theme was sounded the evening before America marks the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who advanced the cause of civil rights. A coalition of Moorhead educational, government and cultural groups sponsored Taulbert’s talk before 300-plus people at Concordia College’s Memorial Auditorium. Taulbert used his experiences growing up in the segregated rural south – the Mississippi Delta, to be exact – as a launching point to encourage people to focus on human relationships. Those relationships, he said, are the basis of progress and better communities. Fit for a King? Fargo woman sees street value in
honoring civil rights icon http://www.in-forum.com/articles/?id=25959 Janeen Kobrinsky puts her talent where her mouth is. As she did last year, she will be master of ceremonies and perform at Monday’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Fargo Theatre. The one-hour event will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Kobrinsky, a member of Fargo’s Human Relations Commission, recently proposed naming a Fargo street after King. Bill worries gay families http://www.in-forum.com/articles/?id=26265 BISMARCK – Gay families asked legislators Tuesday to not pass a bill they say legalizes discrimination against them should they want to adopt children. But the sponsor said it’s a religious freedom bill. Senate Bill 2188 would prevent the state from denying an adoption agency license to organizations refusing to facilitate adoptions that violate its religious or moral convictions. In North Dakota, all the adoption agencies are private groups that obtain a state license to operate. There are six such agencies, four of which are affiliated with a religious denomination. One nondenominational agency is inactive, said opponents of the bill. Human rights patrons honored http://www.in-forum.com/articles/?id=26002 Thirteen people will receive Human Rights Awards from the city of Moorhead on Tuesday. Rev. Clay Ellingson, Rosie Gonzalez, Susan Halvorson, Minh Tran, Dale Johnson, Louis Ochoa, Jr., Elizabeth Swee, Stacie Loegering, Sandra Berlin, Jesse Rapp, Darren Leno, and David and Lois Smedstad were recognized for significant contributions to human rights in Moorhead in the past year. “We have an incredible number of people living in the community that do a lot day in and day out to help those who are disadvantaged, those whose rights may not be as respected as others,” said Brian Arett, chairman of the Moorhead Human Rights Commission, the organization that chose the award-winners. Recipients will be honored with a reception at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Moorhead Center Mall fountain area. The awards, given in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, will be presented at the Moorhead City Council meeting following the reception.
