2.) Forum Editorials on Defeat of SB 2306

Other views: Rejection of rights panel sends a wrong message

By Cheryl Bergian

The Forum - 02/15/2003  http://www.in-forum.com/articles/cache/?id=27752

Senate Bill 2306, which would have created a volunteer and independent North Dakota Commission on Human Rights, was defeated by the North Dakota Senate on Tuesday, Feb. 11, despite being scheduled for a hearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee the next day. Other citizens and I who came to provide information to the Senate Appropriations Committee never got the chance to do so. Our right to offer amendments to the bill at the hearing which had been scheduled the week before was taken away by the Senate’s altogether too hasty action.

Forum editorial: Legislature chalks up 3 failures

The Forum - 02/16/2003 http://www.in-forum.com/articles/cache/?id=27767

Last week the North Dakota Legislature gave cynics the evidence they needed to conclude that backwards is the state’s preferred direction.

In short order, lawmakers rejected formation of an independent state human rights commission, an agency to deal with population decline, and a measure to demand accountability from businesses that receive taxpayer-subsidized grants and loans.

5.) UND and Gandhi Peace Network Host Peacemaking Seminars

UND Conflict Resolution Center and Gandhi Peace Network of N Dakota to Offer “Personal Peacemaking-Bridging Cultures with Peace” in Bismarck Feb 22nd.

At the seminar we will learn about the connection between peace within us and world peace. By gaining a deeper understanding of the human experience of conflict, we will begin to understand how we can bring peace to our own lives and to those around us, and if we so choose, the world.

To bridge cultures with peace an understanding of “Privilege” and "Rank" is essential. By understanding that we can find ways to support others who might not enjoy our rank or privilege. The work of Arnold Mindell (1995) "Sitting in the Fire: Large Group Transformation Using Conflict and Diversity" will be utilized for this discussion. As we humanize the conflicts in our lives, we are better able to find peace as the path. John Paul Lederach speaks of the courage of Gandhi and other peacemakers: "it is the simple courage of engagement and dialogue we hope to instill in our children at school when faced with a bully,...[that] I wish for in our leaders." Join us in a dialogue about conflict and peace.

Center volunteer and past staff member Thomas Fuchs will serve as trainer for the seminars. Fuchs has presented nationally and statewide as a trainer for the Center and serves the Center as a mediator for the U.S. Postal Service. He has worked extensively with communities and youth in the areas of conflict resolution/violence prevention. He is currently the director of Glenmore Recovery Center, Crookston, MN.

Gandhi Peace Network of N Dakota is offering these as a three part series on “Community Peace Building” during "A Season for Nonviolence" - nine weeks of daily practices of nonviolent principles. The first events will be these two half-day seminars.

Bismarck-Mandan area residents will have the opportunity to learn about “Personal Peacemaking” at either one of two seminars on Saturday, February 22nd at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 818 East Divide Ave., Bismarck. The first seminar runs from 9am to Noon, and the second from 1pm to 4 pm.

Those wishing to register for either one of the seminars should contact Aruna/Vinod Seth at 701 223 4234, Email jjart@btinet.net. The charge for the seminars is $10 for adults, $2 for students. Refreshments will be served.
