The North Dakota Human Rights Coalition EncouragesGovernor Hoeven To Consider the Gender of Applicants When Making the Appointment of District Judge
Fargo – The North Dakota Human Rights Coalition has encouraged Governor Hoeven to consider the gender of applicants when making his decision on the appointment of a district court judge in Fargo. The Judicial Nominating Committee has submitted three applicants for Governor Hoeven’s consideration in making the appointment for the district court vacancy, two of which are women. The Chair of the Judicial Nominating Committee, Bernie Dardis, is quoted in a News Flash from the State Bar Association in North Dakota on March 10, 2004 as stating that “each one of the three nominees would make an excellent district judge in Fargo.”
“Only 16.7 % of the district court judges in North Dakota are women,” said Allan Peterson, Chair of the Board of Directors of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition. “But, 50.1% of the population of the state are women. All of the finalists for the position are qualified applicants; it is appropriate for Governor Hoeven to consider the gender of the applicants when making his decision on who to appoint.”
“Governor Hoeven has had the opportunity to appoint women on several occasions since he was elected, and has done so only once,” says Cheryl Bergian, Director of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition. “We encourage Governor Hoeven to begin to remedy the significant disparity in gender diversity on the district court bench in North Dakota by appointing one of the two women recommended by the Judicial Nominating Committee.”
The North Dakota Human Rights Coalition believes that the number of women, people of color and people with disabilities in state and local government should reflect those numbers in the population of this state. Their representation in government, including the judiciary, is necessary to provide the perspective of these populations in the branches of government, and for those who access our government to believe that those who make the decisions in our government understand the concerns of all residents of North Dakota.
