North Dakota Needs a Human Rights Commission

The Division of Human Rights within the Department of Labor does not include the perspective of those who experience discrimination.

A North Dakota Human Rights Commission would include people from across the state who can bring information and assistance regarding human rights to state government and back to their communities.

The Division of Human Rights within the Department of Labor is unable to reach into all regions of the state to provide education on human rights and gather information on the extent of discrimination in the state.

A North Dakota Human Rights Commission would be empowered to respond to human rights questions and concerns.

The North Dakota Human Rights Coalition asked the Department of Labor in June, 2001 to establish an advisory committee that would include people with disabilities, people of color, women, and members from the across the state. The Department of Labor has been considering that request for 15 months and has given no answer yet.

The North Dakota Department of Labor was required by the legislature in April, 2001 to conduct a study of the nature and extent of discrimination in the state. The North Dakota Department of Labor conducted the study in December, 2001 but has not released the results of that study yet, 9 months later.
