North Dakota Human Rights Coalition

Paid Summer Internship

 

The North Dakota Human Rights Coalition seeks applicants for a summer intern to interview individuals in North Dakota who have experienced discrimination and to document those experiences, with a focus on people in the gay/lesbian/transgender bisexual community, people of color (including Native Americans and New Americans) and people with disabilities.

 

 

Skills and knowledge required

 

bullet

The ability to interview and record oral communications

bullet

Comfort with introducing oneself to individuals and groups

bullet

The ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form

bullet

The ability to work independently and be a self-starter

bullet

Sensitivity to and an understanding of cultural differences among people

bullet

An understanding and commitment to the mission of the NDHRC

bullet

Proficiency with standard computer software, including word processing, web browsing and e-mail

bullet

A vehicle, drivers license, and vehicle insurance

 

  

Knowledge preferred

 

bullet

A knowledge of human rights issues

bullet

A knowledge of civil rights law

bullet

Personal experience of or experience in organizations which serve those who are a focus of the project (i.e., members of the GLBT community, people of color, or people with disabilities)

Eligibility

 

Interns must meet all the following requirements:

Undergraduate enrollment in a college in Minnesota, North Dakota, or Wisconsin OR Augustana/Sioux Falls or Williams College

bullet

Returning to college as an undergraduate student in the fall of 2004

bullet

Have no previous employment or internship with the NDHRC

bullet

Not be a relative of any paid or volunteer staff or board member of the NDHRC

bullet

Not have participated in the Partners Internship Program in a previous year

 

 

Salary, dates, hours and location of employment

 

bullet

The intern will be paid $8.75 per hour for 400 hours (ten 40-hour weeks)

bullet

Working hours are flexible

bullet

The intern will begin work the first week in June; if available, the internship could start earlier in May

bullet

The intern could work from many locations in North Dakota; relocation may or may not be required

 

 

The NDHRC will provide

Weekly mentoring with NDHRC staff
