The bill to change the name of the North Dakota Dept. of Labor to the North Dakota Dept. of Labor and Human Rights is scheduled for hearing this week (Wednesday, January 26, 8:30 a.m., before the Senate Industry, Business and Labor Committee in the Roosevelt Park Room at the North Dakota Capitol in Bismarck.)

Labor Commissioner Leann Bertsch doesn't think it's necessary to change the name - see article below.

Please let the members of the Senate Industry, Business & Labor Committee, and Commissioner Bertsch, know why it's important to change the name of the Labor Department.  E-mails can be sent to:

Suggested comments:

I support SB 2245, which will change the name of the ND Department of Labor to the ND Department of Labor and Human Rights

This will more accurately describe the work and responsibilities of the department, and make it easier for residents of North Dakota to find the Division of Human Rights in the Department of Labor.

The one-time cost of $5,200 is worth the increased visibility and service to North Dakotans.

Please feel free to contact me if you have questions.  We note that the Worker's Compensation Bureau changed its name to "Workforce Safety and Insurance" in the past year.  From the WSI website:

This year marks a turning point for our organization. Just recently, the organization changed its name from North Dakota Workers Compensation (Bureau) to Workforce Safety & Insurance. We live in changing times − and in keeping up with those changing times, we wanted a name that more closely reflects our commitment to providing safety and insurance services to the workforce across North Dakota.

Surely the same reasoning could apply to the Labor Department.

Name fight

Sen. Tim Mathern, D-Fargo, and Rep. Blair Thoreson, R-Fargo, have introduced a bill to change the state Department of Labor's name to the Department of Labor and Human Rights.

Mathern said it more closely matches the office's mission. Human rights enforcement was added in 2001.

Labor Commissioner Leann Bertsch doesn't think it is necessary to change the name. She said it would just waste money needed to reprint brochures, posters and so on. The department's Human Rights Division is clearly marked on brochures and other items, she said.

Maybe we can ask her to talk to the people at the Capitol's state personnel office. Formerly known as Central Personnel, its name is now North Dakota Human Resources Management Services. Apparently, it seems there is a law that any name change in government must be at least twice as long as the one it is replacing.
