NDHRC Board Members

 

Gerry Even, Chair

Committee(s): Executive, Legislative, Development

   Gerry Even is the controller of John T. Jones Construction Co. and is also responsible for Human Resources and benefits of the regional construction company and affiliates.  He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and is active on several industry and professional committees.  Gerry has been a member of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition Board of Directors since 2003.

 

Lori Brownshield, Vice Chair

Committee(s): Executive

   Lori Brownshield is an advanced practice psychiatric nurse at Prairie St. John's in Fargo, North Dakota.

 

Allan Peterson, Executive Committee Member-at-Large & Past Chair

Committee(s): Executive, Legislative, Development

   Allan Peterson serves as President and Legislative Liaison for the North Dakota Association of the Blind.  Allan is Chair for Handi-Wheels Transportation Service for people with disadvantages and disabilities; board member of Churches United for the Homeless; and Chair for the Worship Committee of Churches United for the Homeless.  Allan is an active member of the North Dakota Independent Living Council; Advisory Board for Vision Services, School for the Blind; and the Board of Directors, Disability Advocacy Consortium.  He is the Mission Ministry Chair for St. John’s Lutheran Church. 

   Allan also provides a leadership role for a support group for people who are blind & visually impaired in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Allan has been a member of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition Board of Directors since its inception in November 1999.

 

Colleen Whitaker

Committee(s): Executive

   Colleen Whitaker has operated successful small businesses in the public sector, and has managed large and small engineering projects, both Federal and State.  She has worked with the ACLU and LAMBDA on cases involving discrimination in the workplace.

   Colleen has also been involved with securing federal grants, funding for municipal / MR&I reclamation projects & EEOC project compliance within the state.  She has also done public speaking at NDSU and MSUM in Minneapolis on cultural diversity, GLBT issues and job discrimination.

 

Thomas Fiebiger

Committee(s): Development

   Tom Fiebiger is a licensed attorney currently serving as a State Senator from District 45 where he serves on the Judiciary and Transportation Committees. Currently, Tom has his own law office and is in practice in Fargo, licensed in both North Dakota and Minnesota.  He has represented workers and business owners in labor and employment matters and civil litigation for the last 15 years. 

  He is a former member and chair of the Fargo Human Relations Commission, past president of Trinity Lutheran Church, former member and chair of the Lost and Found Ministry Board and currently serves on the Cultural Diversity Resources Board.  Tom has been a member of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition Board of Directors since February 2005.

 

Avallon Becky Knight

Committee(s): Development, Nominating

   Avallon Becky Beaks (Knight) also known as “Red Sunset” by traditional name is a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa & Arikara Nation with grandparents from the Sioux Nation in Montana.  Becky has promoted homeownership initiatives and homebuyer education for 10 years through her service to the Fort Berthold Housing Authority.  She also promotes homeownership throughout North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota.  Becky received a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of New Mexico, and received her Masters Degree in Management from the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota in 2004. 

   Becky is a member of the Federal Home Loan, Affordable Housing Advisory Council.  She is also a member of the North Dakota Housing Finance Agency Advisory Board since 1999, a member to the North Dakota Fannie Mae Partnership Office since 2000 and a member to the Coalition for Indian Housing Authorities in North Dakota.  Becky has dedicated her time and energy to making the dream of homeownership a reality for many Native Americans in North Dakota.  Becky has been a member of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition Board of Directors since February 2005.

  

Dan Mahli

Committee(s): Nominating

   Dan Mahli is an Assistant Planner for the City of Fargo.  In addition to staffing the City's Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative, Dan provides staff assistance to the Fargo Human Relations Commission, Community Development Committee, Historic Preservation Commission and Metro Area Mayors Committee for People with Disabilities. 

   He previously served as a Case Manager in Senator Byron Dorgan's Fargo office and Executive Director of the Park Rapids (MN) Area Chamber of Commerce.  Dan has been a member of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition Board of Directors since its inception in November 1999.

 

Carol A. Reed

Committee(s): Executive, Conference

   Carol was born and raised in Rapid City, SD, and received a B.S. in Geology from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Carol moved to North Dakota in 1975, where she worked as a geologist for 19 years. She is married and with two grown sons. As a result of being a woman in a non-traditional occupation, personal and work experiences made her realize that her passion was civil rights and especially women’s equality. She was appointed by the governor to the North Dakota Commission on the Status of Women in 1994 and served for 10 years, 8 years as chair. Carol also served as a Board Member and Secretary of the National Association of Commissions for Women 6 years.

   Carol currently works as a Civil Rights Manager for USDA-Rural Development. In 2002 she earned a Masters in Public Administration degree from the University of North Dakota. Carol annually volunteers as a judge for state and national American Indian Science and Engineering Fairs and high school Science Bowls in order to serve as a role model for young women in science and engineering.  Carol has been a member of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition Board of Directors since 2003. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Fair Housing of the Dakotas.

 

Jamie Selzler, Treasurer

Committee(s): Executive, Development

   Jamie Selzler has been the Executive Director of the North Dakota Democratic-NPL since early 200. Before that, he was with Amazon.com's Grand Forks location since 2000 as a Manager in Technical Account Management. Jamie has a particular interest in the issues affecting young people of North Dakota, and has previously served on the Minot Commission on Youth.

   He most recently served as a member of Grand Forks Mayor Mike Brown's Cabinet on Young People and was Chairman of North Dakota Government Affairs for the Grand Forks-East Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce. He is active in the American Legion youth program Boy's State. He is also a member of the North Dakota Center for the Public Good and the North Dakota Wildlife Federation. Jamie has been a member of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition Board of Directors since 2005.

 

Kara Stack

Committee(s): Annual Conference, Nominating

   Kara Stack is the Assistant Director for Service Learning and Civic Engagement at NDSU. In this role, she coordinates the University's service-learning program and provides a variety of diversity and social-justice related programs.  Kara serves on both the President's Diversity Council and the Anti-racism Team, through which she assists in facilitating anti-racism training opportunities, at NDSU. She also serves on the committee for the Professional Issues Conference for LGBT Persons and their Families.

   Kara holds a B.A. in English and Business Communications from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD, and a M.S. in Counseling and Student Affairs from Minnesota State University Moorhead.  She is married with three young children.  She has been a member of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition Board of Directors since 2006.

 

Crysta Parkinson

Committee(s): Annual Conference

   Crysta Parkinson runs her own PR company, based in Williston, North Dakota. Previously, she was the managing editor of the Williston Herald. She grew up and received her education in western Washington, and has lived in North Dakota for three years.
   Crysta has a particular interest in issues of domestic violence and issues facing North Dakota’s women. She sits on the North Dakota Domestic and Sexual Violence State Prevention Team and is a charter member of the North Dakota Women’s Network. She is also a director for the Upper Missouri Arts Council in Williston.
   She and her husband Justin are active with the North Dakota Jaycees, and were named national Jaycee family of the year in 2006. She has three children and two step-children. Crysta has been a member of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition Board of Directors since 2007.
 

Wade Schemmel

Committee(s): Development

   Wade Schemmel is the Conference Minister for the Northern Plains Conference of the United Church of Christ. Over the years Wade has served in a variety of capacities as part of workgroups and as a committee member in organizations that have sought to address the needs of the poor and the marginalized. As a new member of the Human Rights Coalition, Wade is looking forward to the opportunity to continue in that service.

 

Courtney Olson

Commettee(s): Conference

   Courtney Olson was born and raised in Grand Forks, ND.  She is a junior at the University of North Dakota studying communication with an emphasis in public relations and pre-law.  Courtney is the current President of the University of North Dakota chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, a member of the Association for Women in Communication, and assisted in the formation and holds a position on the executive board of the School of Communication Student Council.  

   Courtney has been a member of the North Dakota Army National Guard since November of 1999.  She returned from a one year deployment to Afghanistan in February 2007, and became a member of the Board of Directors for the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition shortly thereafter.  She is excited for the opportunity to continue work in the field of human rights.

Mitch Marr

   Mitch Marr is the Executive Director of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition. He began his work with the NDHRC in 2006 as Administraive Assistant before filling the role of Assistant Director & Program Coordinator. Mitch previously worked for the High Plains Reader. He is still a contributing writer for the weekly newspaper and also serves on the Fargo Human Relations Commission and the board of  the Pride Collective & Community Center, a regional GLBT non-profit.

 

Jesse Hegland

   Jesse Hegland is the Administrative Assistant for the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition.  He was raised on a farm near Sheyenne, North Dakota, and has lived and worked in the state for most of his life.  He moved back to Fargo in February of 2008 after spending some time in the Master's Degree program in International Human Rights at the University of Denver.  He moved back to be closer to his family and to become involved in human rights and social justice issues in the community, state, and surrounding areas.  He previously worked for Access of the Red River Valley, Inc., in Moorhead; the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch in Fargo; and Family Tree, Inc., in Denver.

   Jesse is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Human Services with a specialization in Management of Nonprofit Agencies online from Capella University in Minneapolis.  He has Bachelor's Degrees in Psychology and Business Administration from North Dakota State University and Jamestown College, respectively. Jesse also serves on the board of People Escaping Poverty Project (PEPP), a non-profit based in Moorhead, MN.
