Support NCAA Ruling on Use of American Indian Mascots

The NCAA decided to ban the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments. Schools using American Indian mascots or nicknames would also be barred from hosting NCAA postseason tournaments.  At least 18 schools have mascots the NCAA deems "hostile or abusive," including the University of North Dakota.

The North Dakota Human Rights Coalition opposes the use of nicknames, mascots and logos which refer to Native American tribes at educational institutions in North Dakota.  Visit our web site at http://ndhrc.org/NDHRC_Use_of_Mascots_&_Other_Position.htm for the NDHRC’s full position on the issue.

The NDHRC encourages public statements in support of the NCAA ruling and will be sending letters to the editor and to the NCAA.

Stephen Kaufman of UND has said, “It is crucial that the NCAA directly hear from Native American individuals and organizations.  They are taking a great deal of heat for doing the right thing, including threats of legal suits.  We need to keep them from wobbling."
